SCOPE:

Oversight of two Emergency Departments located at Mercy Health Lorain Hospital and Mercy Health Allen Hospital

JOB SUMMARY: The Director works under the responsibility of the VP Ancillary and Support Services and has a matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Nursing Officer.Responsible for all emergency services, and EMS departments for the Lorain Market.The director is responsible for the overall supervision, clinical, operational, and financial management of the emergency, and EMS departments in order to achieve quality, financial, and customer service objectives of the hospital.Responsible for setting goals for specific teams and enhancing the ongoing management and achievement of stated expectations.

Measures the impact and implications of actions and decisions within the departments, including revenues/ expenses and operating margins.

Operates within an overall strategy set forth by the organization.

Develops business, customer service and performance improvement strategies for each department.

Collaboratively plans, implements, and evaluates health care measures aimed at optimal health care.

Responsible for quality, safety, service and legal and regulatory compliance for areas of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides leadership with respect to operational planning, and development of emergency services across the market .

Integrates and coordinates services with medical staff, hospital services and related external agencies.

Responsible for defined financial, productivity, and performance improvement goals.

Assists the VP with financial analysis/projections, creation of business plans, workflows and ROIs as required to support strategic planning.

Ability to interpret and supervise business and clinical policies of practice.

Must understand the ethics of confidentiality, possess good organizational skills and can communicate well with all people.

Can effectively act as a liaison between employees, patients and physicians.

Where necessary, resets performance expectations and monitors.

Addressing variances and managing the FTE’s for the unit in conjunction with the work productivity.

Keeps lines of communication open between staff and administration.

Facilitates performance management process by setting goals, mentoring and coaching staff members, providing feedback, and conducting reviews.

Participates in the candidate selection process, creates a training and development plan, conducts staff meetings and 1-1 meetings as necessary.

Interviews, selects, ensures proper training of, and when necessary disciplines and/or discharges of personnel.

Develops, secures approval of, and implements the short term and long-term goals and objectives that assist the health center in achieving the objectives outlined in the strategic plan.

Participates on select committees for the purpose of providing input and communicating needs/problems to/from committee and personnel.

(Infection Control, JCAHO, Leadership, etc.)
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Required Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Nursing (BSN) Licensure/Certification Required: RN license in OH, BLS, ACLS, PALS Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 3 years’ experience in healthcare administration or management required.

Previous Emergency Department experience required.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Experience in all aspects of department administration, including strategic planning, budgeting, practice management, human resources, information systems.Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

Expertise in spreadsheet and database applications.

Ability to work well under pressure, establish priorities and motivate staff.
